뉴욕한국학교는 1973년에 동부에서 처음으로 승인된 한국학교로서 50년이 넘는 시간동안 학생들이 한국어, 학국문화와 역사를 배우면서 Korean American 으로서의 주체성과 자부심을 가지고 성장하는데 최선을 다하고 있습니다. 뉴욕을 중심으로 웨스트체스터, 퀸즈, 뉴저지의 한인 가족들과 따듯하고 배려깊은 커뮤미티로 계속 협력해 나갈 것입니다.

Throughout our proud 50-year history, KSNY has a long-standing tradition of families and community members playing a critical role as partners in supporting KSNY’s cultural programs. Our amazing teachers are committed to understanding students’ needs in learning Korean and experiencing Korean culture. KSNY engages students and their families as lifelong learners in an ever-changing world. 학교 역사
Rooted in Tradition and History
전통과 역사에 뿌리를 둔 학교
Founders Huh Byeong-ryeol, Kim Hong-jun, Jeong Han-gil and Eom Ho-taek founded The Korean School of New York when it opened its doors on May 5, 1973 with 32 students at the John F. Kennedy High School in the Bronx.
Through the decades, the Korean School of New York has been a leading model for Saturday Korean schools throughout the United States, providing training to Korean school teachers and collaborating in art and music festivals for the Korean schools in the North East region.
In 1981, KSNY founders were instrumental in the founding of the National Association of Korean Schools (NAKS), which cultivates the development of instruction in Korean language, culture, and history while maintaining strong bonds between the Korean schools across the U.S.
By 2011, KSNY relocated to its current site at In-Tech Academy (PS 368) in the Riverdale/Marble Hill section of the Bronx.
In 2012, KSNY was selected as a ‘history education pilot school’ by the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Korea.
허병렬, 김홍준, 정한길, 엄호택 선생님들은 1973년 5월 5일 뉴욕 John F. Kennedy 고등학교 에서 32명의 학생들과 함께 한국학교 뉴욕을 창립했습니다.
수십 년 동안 한국학교 뉴욕은 미국 전역의 토요학교들에 선도적인 모범으로 자리 잡았으며, 한국어 교사들을 교육하고 미북동부 지역 한국학교들의 예술과 음악 축제에 협력해왔습니다.
1981년, 뉴욕 한국학교 창립자들은 미국 전역의 한국학교들 간 강력한 유대를 유지하며 한국어, 문화, 역사 교육을 발전시키는 데 중요한 역할을 했으며, 이 과정에서 미국 한국학교협회(NAKS) 설립에도 기여했습니다.
2011년까지 한국학교 뉴욕은 브롱스의 리버데일/마블 힐 지역 인텍 아카데미(PS 368)로 이전했습니다.
2012년에는 한국 교육부에 의해 '역사 교육 실험학교'로 선정되기도 했습니다.

Byeong-ryeol Huh
허병렬 선생님
Byeong-ryeol Huh has been committed to honoring Korean identity for the diaspora through her life's work. She has been a pioneering educator in Korean language and culture in New York since 1967, and achieved her dream of establishing a school when she founded the Korean School of New York in 1973.
Inspired by her historic efforts and the success of KSNY, Korean American educators followed her lead in founding other Korean schools across the United States and in1981 formed, what is now, the National Association of Korean Schools (NAKS).
After teaching at the Korean School of New York for 36 years, Ms. Huh retired as principal in 2009.
허병렬 선생님께서는 평생을 후손들의 정체성 확립에 기여해 오셨습니다.
이미 1967년부터 뉴욕에서 한글교육과 한국문화교육을 시행하셨고, 1973년 뉴욕한국학교를 설립하시며 체계적인 학교설립의 꿈을 이루셨습니다. 그후 미주지역에 설립된 한국학교 관계자들과 뜻을 같이하며 1980년에는 현재의 재미한국학교협의회(NAKS)를 창립하는데 앞장서시었습니다.
2009년 36년간의 뉴욕한국학교 교장직을 퇴임하시며 차기 교장을 뉴욕한국학교 졸업생(최선경)에서 발탁하신 것도 교육계의 귀감이 되고 있습니다.
선생님은 2018년 이사장직을 끝으로 퇴임하시기 직전까지 교단에 서시어 후학을 양성하셨습니다. 이는 해방직후부터 교사로 봉직하신 기간을 포함, 교직생활 70여 년의 대장정이었습니다. 선생님께서는 정부로부터 많은 상을 받으셨지만, 무엇보다도 1973년부터 발행해 온 뉴욕한국학교 문집 전집을 국립한글박물관에서 ‘한국어 발전의 역사적 기록물로 가치있다’고 인정한 점을 제일 큰 상으로 꼽으십니다.
